Expense Canary Guides

The best subscription tracker apps in Canada

Many well known subscription apps are US only. This guide compares the options that work for Canadians, what each one does well, and who it suits. We make Expense Canary, so we have said plainly where another app is the better pick.

How to choose

  • You want to find hidden fees and forgotten subscriptions across all your banks: Expense Canary.
  • You want help cancelling and a web dashboard: SubSight.
  • You want a full budget plus subscriptions: Monarch Money or PocketGuard.
  • You do not want to link a bank at all: Bobby (manual) or Expenvo, our web tool that reads statements without a bank connection.
  • You already bank with KOHO and only use that card: KOHO's own notifications may be enough.

Expense Canary

A mobile app that links all your Canadian and US accounts read-only through Plaid to find money leaks: forgotten subscriptions in Subscription Radar, hidden fees like maintenance or overdraft charges, and unusual or duplicate charges. It also gives you a heads up when a new one appears. It does not do budgeting or cancel subscriptions for you.

SubSight

A Canadian web dashboard that links banks through Plaid, detects subscriptions and offers cancellation scripts. Good if you want cancellation help and prefer a browser.

PocketGuard

A budgeting app with bill and subscription tracking across the US, Canada and the UK. Its help pages list sync issues with several large Canadian banks, so test yours during the trial.

Monarch Money

A full personal finance app with budgets, goals and recurring tracking. Strong if you want everything in one place and do not mind the higher price.

Bobby

A simple iPhone app where you type in your subscriptions. No bank connection, so it will not catch charges you forgot about.

KOHO

A spending account, not a tracker. Useful notifications for spending on its own card, but it will not see your other banks.

FAQ

Does Rocket Money work in Canada? No. It supports US banks only.

What is the best free subscription tracker in Canada? Bobby is free but manual. SubSight has a free tier, and its paid plans start with a 3 day free trial. Expense Canary offers 7-day free Premium, then $4.99 USD/month.

Which apps link to Canadian banks? Expense Canary, SubSight, PocketGuard and Monarch Money, mostly through Plaid. Coverage varies by bank.

Is it safe to link my bank to a subscription tracker? Look for read-only connections. Expense Canary uses Plaid read-only access and cannot move money.

Quick questions

Why pay for a subscription to find subscriptions?
Fair question. Expense Canary watches all your banks for the stuff that's easy to miss, like new bank fees, forgotten subscriptions that are still charging, and unusual or duplicate charges. You hear about them the same day instead of months later. 7-day free Premium, then $4.99 USD/month. Cancel anytime in the App Store or Google Play.
Can't I just log in to each bank and check?
You can. The catch is remembering to do it, and spotting a small fee buried in a statement. Expense Canary checks for you, across all your banks in one place.
