Expense Canary Guides

A Rocket Money alternative that works in Canada

Rocket Money (formerly Truebill) is a popular subscription and budgeting app, but it only supports US banks. If you bank in Canada, you need something else. Expense Canary is a mobile app for iOS and Android that links your Canadian or US bank accounts read-only and finds the money leaks you may not know about: hidden bank fees, forgotten subscriptions that are still charging, and unusual or duplicate charges.

Does Rocket Money work in Canada?

Rocket Money's help centre says it does not support international banks, which includes Canadian institutions. Source: help.rocketmoney.com, checked October 22, 2026.

Where Rocket Money is the better choice

If you live in the US and want someone to cancel subscriptions for you, or you want a full budget in the same app, Rocket Money does more. Expense Canary does not cancel subscriptions or negotiate bills.

Where Expense Canary fits

  • You want to find hidden fees and forgotten subscriptions across all your banks.
  • You bank in Canada, or across Canada and the US.
  • You want every recurring charge in one list.
  • You do not want a full budgeting app.

How it works

  1. Install Expense Canary on iPhone or Android.
  2. Connect your bank read-only through Plaid. We never receive your bank login and cannot move money.
  3. See hidden fees, recurring subscriptions and unusual charges in one place, with a heads up when a new one appears.

Alert timing depends on when your bank posts the transaction and when Plaid delivers it.

Check your bank first

Plaid coverage in Canada varies by institution. Confirm your bank connects before you rely on it.

FAQ

Is Expense Canary free? 7-day free Premium, then $4.99 USD/month through the App Store or Google Play.

Can Expense Canary cancel my subscriptions? No. It finds them and keeps them in one list so you can decide what to keep. You cancel with the merchant.

Is it safe to connect my bank? Connections are read-only through Plaid. Expense Canary cannot move money and never sees your bank login.

Do you have a version that does not link my bank? Expense Canary needs a bank connection. If you would rather not link a bank, our sister product Expenvo works from statements on the web.

Quick questions

Why pay for a subscription to find subscriptions?
Fair question. Expense Canary watches all your banks for the stuff that's easy to miss, like new bank fees, forgotten subscriptions that are still charging, and unusual or duplicate charges. You hear about them the same day instead of months later. 7-day free Premium, then $4.99 USD/month. Cancel anytime in the App Store or Google Play.
Can't I just log in to each bank and check?
You can. The catch is remembering to do it, and spotting a small fee buried in a statement. Expense Canary checks for you, across all your banks in one place.
