Expense Canary Guides
How to cancel Monarch Money
You can cancel Monarch Money yourself. The steps depend on where you pay: directly on Monarch's website, through the Apple App Store, or through Google Play. Pick the section that matches your bill. After you cancel, you keep access for the time left on your current subscription.
Not sure where you pay? Look at the charge on your card or bank statement. An Apple or Google Play line means you cancel in that store. A Monarch line means you cancel on Monarch's website.
Cancel Monarch Money on the website (direct billing)
Steps from Monarch's help centre (article last updated October 20, 2026; checked October 26, 2026):
- Go to the Billing Settings page. This is on the web only.
- Click Manage subscription.
- Click Cancel Subscription.
If you do not see a cancel option, you are probably a household member and not the household admin. Only the admin can cancel the subscription, so ask them to do it.
If you use the Android app and pay Monarch directly, open Monarch in a web browser to manage billing. Monarch says the Android app cannot open web billing.
Cancel Monarch Money on iPhone (App Store billing)
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap your name.
- Tap Subscriptions.
- Select Monarch.
- Tap Cancel Subscription.
Monarch says its staff cannot see App Store subscription details. For App Store refunds, you need to contact Apple.
Cancel Monarch Money on Android (Google Play billing)
- Open the Google Play Store app.
- Tap your profile picture in the top right.
- Tap Payments and subscriptions, then Subscriptions.
- Select Monarch and cancel.
If Monarch is not in the list, you may be on a family plan. The family manager has to cancel it.
Cancel during the free trial
Monarch's pricing page says your first week is free. Its FAQ says you can cancel during the trial, keep access for the rest of the trial, and you will not be billed if you cancel at least 24 hours before the trial ends.
What happens after you cancel
From Monarch's help article:
- You keep access until the end of the period you already paid for.
- Subscriptions cannot be paused or frozen.
- Your existing Monarch data is not deleted.
- After 30 days, your bank connections disconnect and no new data syncs while you are unsubscribed.
Deleting your Monarch account is a separate step from canceling. Do that only if you also want the data removed.
Monarch Money pricing (so you know what you are canceling)
Monarch's pricing page (checked October 26, 2026) lists the base plan (Core) at $14.99 a month or $99.99 a year. Monarch Plus is a separate annual tier at $199.99 a year, with forecasting, business tracking, and deeper investment tools. Confirm your own plan and renewal date on the Billing Settings page before you cancel.
After you cancel: keep watching for money leaks
Canceling a budgeting app does not stop banks from charging fees, or stop free trials from rolling into paid plans. If you mainly used Monarch to spot recurring charges, you still need a way to check every bank and card.
Expense Canary is a narrower tool. It links US and Canadian banks read only through Plaid and looks for money leaks you may not know about: forgotten subscriptions still charging, hidden bank fees across accounts, and unusual or duplicate charges. It is not a budget, and it does not cancel anything for you. Pricing: 7-day free Premium, then $4.99 USD/month.
Where Monarch is still the better choice
Keep Monarch if you want budgets, cash flow, net worth, investments, goals, and shared household finances in one app with a web dashboard. Expense Canary does none of those.
Where Expense Canary fits after you cancel
- You stopped using budget categories but still want to catch leaks.
- You want forgotten subscriptions, hidden fees, and unusual charges from every linked bank in one place.
- You use iPhone or Android and bank in the US or Canada.
- You are fine canceling merchants yourself once you see the list.
FAQ
Does canceling Monarch delete my data? No. Monarch says your data stays, but bank connections disconnect after 30 days and stop syncing.
Can I pause Monarch instead of canceling? No. Monarch says subscriptions cannot be paused or frozen.
Why can't I see a cancel button? You may be a household member rather than the admin, or you may pay through Apple or Google Play. Check the billing source on your statement.
Can Monarch refund an App Store charge? Monarch says it cannot access App Store subscription details. Request App Store refunds from Apple.
Does Expense Canary cancel subscriptions for me? No. It finds recurring charges and other money leaks so you can cancel with the merchant.
